up_the_irons: hi ballen

ballen: Hey up_the_irons, thanks for doing the testbed VM. Just got your email
up_the_irons: ballen: ah, I had a feeling it was you... ;)
ballen: :-)
up_the_irons: no problem on the VM, I did many betas when the beta program was going
ballen: cool
Can you do a minimal install + plus man pages, and src -> base + sys
don't worry about it if you've already got it going
up_the_irons: this is what i usually do:
- base
- kernels (GENERIC)
- info
- man
- ports
ballen: ^^
ballen: that'll due
up_the_irons: ballen: I can add src to that if u like
ballen: don't worry about it I can always install it later
btw, whats in info
so used to doing installs in a certain way I don't even remember
up_the_irons: ballen: info is the 'info' pages (like 'man' but more like a book format)
ballen: ah right
so how big is ARP Networks?
as far as employees, clients ,etc
up_the_irons: doing an interview, bbl
ballen: ok dokie
I'll be around
also I'm a sysadmin looking for work, if thats what you're interviewing ;-)
up_the_irons: haha
it is actually
the dude came early
anyway, be back when i'm done
ballen: k

ballen is now known as ballen|away
ballen|away is now known as ballen
up_the_irons: ballen: ARP Networks is a small company headed by myself, along with a couple network / system admins that I call up when I get busy. we have a 100 sq. ft. cage in Wilshire Annex in Los Angeles, that houses all our servers and our clients' servers.
ballen: right on
so how are you on say my VM locks up at 2AM and I email you in a panic for a restart
up_the_irons: ballen: I'm the Director of Technology at a firm called DigiSynd, a Disney company, I don't do ARP Networks full time. I used to, but as hosting prices went from $250 / mo. to $10 / mo, I decided it was best to manage small client base at affordable prices, and try to keep everything running as automated as possible
ballen: ah ok
up_the_irons: ballen: quite honestly, I'd be awake at 2AM. Send an email to support@arpnetworks.com, use the Help Desk system, or hit me up on IRC. But a VM restart is something that I'm going to let clients do by themselves, through the portal
ballen: yea I'd rather to be able to do it anyways
up_the_irons: ballen: also, you'll have out-of-band access through VNC (this feature is already implemented)
ballen: yea I saw that
up_the_irons: the point is, as much as possible, let customers service themselves
ballen: right on
up_the_irons: so right now we're focusing on the niche markets. Not a lot of places offer FreeBSD, or any *BSD, while you can get a Linux VM for a dime a dozen
ballen: yep which is so annoying btw, the lack of BSD's vps
up_the_irons: so I lean toward pushing those
yeah, since most VPS companies are Xen based, they can only reliably do Linux
ballen: Also, why'd you decide on QEMU
up_the_irons: KVM/QEMU can run a larger range of OS's
ballen: yea
up_the_irons: and it can do it damn reliably
ballen: interesting clips on the front page of digisynd.com btw
up_the_irons: I've had OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Solaris, and WinXP all running on the same box
all fast
no crashes
I tried *every* virtualization system out there, and only KVM/QEMU was able to do that
yeah, digisynd.com has some nice stuff up there
ballen: wow, excellent. My experiance with Qemu is with XenServer and running FreeBSD in XenServer is horrid
up_the_irons: plus, the KVM code was accepted into the Linux kernel very early on, a testament to how well the developers had built it.
the only *BSD that I was able to reliably run on Xen was NetBSD 3.0, and that is old now
ballen: true, guessing you're running Linux as your host OS?
up_the_irons: ironically, I can't get NetBSD to run on KVM/QEMU ;)
yup, Linux
ballen: hah, thats interesting.
NetBSD that is
up_the_irons: yeah..
it kernel panics somewhere in the boot process
just haven't had time to follow that bug
ballen: yea
curious, whats the sysadmin position you're trying to fill
up_the_irons: ballen: Junior SA for DigiSynd. I fell down the SA rabbit hole long ago, and have not been able to climb out. We are very backlogged. Need some help doing everything from OpenVPN, to postfix admin, to KVM/QEMU management, to security auditing, to cluster management
ballen: where are you located?
ballen: Right now Rochester, NY heading back to Northern MI on the 24th
Currently employeed at Los Alamos National Laboratory
and finishing my MS in Networking and Systems Administration
up_the_irons: ballen: nice, awesome
ballen: Los Alamos NL has a lab in NY?
ballen: nah
work remotely
started onsite in July 07 for 6 months
and came back to NY for school
up_the_irons: ballen: ah cool
ballen: which school?
ballen: was originally a "co-op", paid internship
Rochester Institute of Technology
Both my undergrad and grad
up_the_irons: nice
I finished my Computer Science undergrad at UCLA, back in '04
ballen: right on
yea hopefully I get get my thesis done here in a month or so
can*
up_the_irons: never went into grad school, even though they gave me an invite.. no GRE, no letters of recommendation, just straight in. But after 5 1/2 years of school, I needed a break ;)
ballen: heh yea, I didn't need to do a GRE either since I was coming back to the same school.
up_the_irons: oh nice
ballen: which was one of the key determining factors of coming back and not another school
up_the_irons: i bet :)
ballen: Not sure if you'd be interested in bringing in someone thats not local, but I could send along my resume if you'd like
up_the_irons: ballen: yeah, right now we're definitely looking for someone local
ballen: ah right on
up_the_irons: ballen: but I wouldn't mind having your resume on file anyway. you can send it to garry [at] digisynd.com
never know what might come up
ballen: will do
up_the_irons: cool
ballen: and sent
up_the_irons: ballen: got it
ballen: cool
up_the_irons: nice GPA... and funny, I don't think I've seen "Thesis" and "GitHub" used in the same sentence
;)
ballen: hah, yea
up_the_irons: nice to see a Thesis isn't all about numbers and symbols anymore
ballen: going to release it under the MIT license because who knows if I can keep it up, or if I'll want to move on
up_the_irons: for sure
ballen: not much use for it to just sit on a CD or in backup somewhere after I'm done
up_the_irons: haha, nice "Car Repair". I have that on my resume as well ;)
ballen: :-)
yea, had a '88 BMW 325iX
up_the_irons: I still drive an '87 Acura Legend
ballen: that I worked on a lot
until I hit a deer
two months ago
up_the_irons: yeah, I've done like everything on my Legend.. only taken it to the mechanic 5 times in 10 years.. i've done a ton of work in my driveway ;)
ah man, too bad, it wrecked it huh?
ballen: well, it was kind of a economic decision. Insurance wanted to total it.
and I wanted a car that I didn't need to fix anymore
up_the_irons: ah right
yeah, i hear ya on that
after 10 years of working on mine, i'm kinda losing the motivation. at least, if I had more free time it would be on thing, but i don't anymore...
***: vtoms has quit IRC ("Leaving.")
ballen: yeeep, I used to work on it with my dad a lot hes a big car guy.
when I moved out to Rochester, lost a shop to work in and a buddy to work on it with
up_the_irons: ballen: ah, yeah
i always worked by myself, but for a long time it was just on the side of the street, or when I got an office, it was in the office parking lot. I finally got a house with a garage in like '06, so that was awesome :)
ballen: yea proper facilities are always nice
up_the_irons: yep
food time
cd $lunch
ballen: lol k, same her except dinner
here*
up_the_irons: hehe
ballen: alright I'll be around tomorrow. If you get the testbed setup just shoot me an email.
up_the_irons: ballen: yup, sure thing
ballen: thanks
