[14:03]
karstensragehello
im considering moving to freebsd from ubuntu
im currently at linode and there are a quite a few mandatory migrations that i cant control
so they take down my linodes and do something, then bring them back up
does arpnetworks do similar things?
[14:07]
hazardouswhat is a mandatory migration?
14:08:54 up 69 days, 14:02, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.05
this was provisioned 69 days ago
[14:08]
karstensragethey put my linode in a queue to be migrated
i dont know why
[14:09]
sjacksolinode has had several critical xen maintenance things for older hosts this year [14:09]
hazardousisn't linode doing forced migrations from xen to kvm [14:09]
sjacksosort of forced
more like strongly encouraged
[14:09]
karstensragei do like linode dont get me wrong
i dont like the forced migrations
i dont like ubuntu anymore
so im looking for a good alternative
the way to get freebsd on linodes, seems hacky at best
id rather have bsd native
[14:10]
hazardouswell, arp likes bsd
a lot, apparently
[14:11]
sjacksokarstensrage: I've been through one host reboot at ARP since getting a VPS there in 2014. It's a good choice if you want to use bsd. [14:11]
hazardousi run ubuntu xenial lts on it, but everyone else here appears to be a bsd fan last i saw [14:11]
karstensragelinode provides DNS too, does arp provide that? [14:12]
hazardousyou mean forward dns? [14:13]
karstensragethey host DNS if youre a customer so i can provide DNS records for my sites and they serve them [14:14]
sjacksokarstensrage: You can configure reverse DNS for your IPs, but no, there's not a DNS service like Linode's. [14:14]
karstensragehmmm [14:15]
sjacksoyour domain registrar may have dns service though [14:15]
hazardousincidentally i've never hosted dns at the same hosting provider anywhere
i usually have domain registered at one company, dns at one company, and hosting at another
going to head out now, but if you're looking for a host karstensrage, can't go wrong with arp
total of 1 ticket submitted in 3.5 years
[14:15]
mike-burnsI've had no complaints with Arp for, um, 7 years? A long time. [14:18]
hazardousi don't think i've ever had an unintentional/unwanted reboot either
my old dedicated was applying rebootless kernel updates with ksplice, 1000d+ uptime
[14:19]
fIorzkarstensrage: just set up your own nameserver? [14:23]
mercutiocloudflare do dns
namecheap do dns i think too
but i prefer running my own dns :)
[14:31]
fIorzyeah, it's so much more flexible and it's automatically in your backup [14:33]
............... (idle for 1h14mn)
up_the_ironsso many registrar's do DNS for free, it wasn't worth for us to develop our own
*registrars
karstensrage: ^^
hazardous: how did you find the stability of doing rebootless kernel updates with ksplice? it always fascinated me, but i've never tried it myself
karstensrage: one of my own VMs here:
$ uptime
15:48:55 up 1739 days, 13:10, 1 user, load average: 0.08, 0.02, 0.01
$
yeah yeah, bad for security, but...
the longest running production host we have:
$ uptime
15:43:14 up 2397 days, 9:55, 2 users, load average: 1.60, 1.76, 1.73
$
which is going to be retired soon... i feel bad...
one of our resolvers:
$ w
16:26:02 up 2116 days, 4:25, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
$
wow, there's no load
mnathani: how are you finding ZFS to be on your new VM? mercutio and I were debating on how well it would run with "low" RAM.
[15:47]
sjacksoI'd be curious to know how ZFS in a VM would work too [15:58]
up_the_ironsI've done it, and it works fine, but you have to have enough RAM
in my experience 4GB was good, but lately i've seen setups with smaller amounts
[15:58]
mercutioi tried linux with 768mb zfs before
and seemed to give worse performance
[15:59]
up_the_ironsyeah that sounds way too low [16:00]
mercutiowell it seemed ok, but it was low enough to decrease disk performance [16:00]
karstensrageup_the_irons, thats fantastic thanks [16:13]
up_the_ironssure [16:14]
karstensrageare you part of arpnetworks or just happy customer? [16:14]
up_the_ironsi'm the owner :) [16:14]
karstensrage:)
ok, good to know
[16:14]
up_the_ironssorry my opinions are biased ;) [16:14]
karstensrageyeah i imagine lol
two DC's
los angeles and germany
are there plans for more?
[16:14]
up_the_ironsnot at the moment, we have our hands full with 2
and we span two big markets with what we have
I had an interesting request the other day, they wanted hosting specifically in Florida, because it is the closest latency-wise to south america (or so they said)
[16:20]
karstensragelinode has 6 dc's [16:23]
mercutiolinode hosts at he.net [16:23]
karstensragefor west coast hurricane electric
right?
but dallas, newark, singapore,
[16:24]
mercutiowhere abouts are you? [16:24]
karstensragebay area [16:24]
mercutiothen having 6 dc doesn't matter? [16:25]
karstensrage? [16:25]
mercutiowell 10 msec vs 20msec latency probably isn't noticable [16:26]
karstensrageim running a service
customers all over
[16:26]
mercutiooh do you distribute? [16:26]
karstensrageits not for me
yeah
[16:26]
mercutioyeh from that point of view it's a bit more complicated.
cdn is a lot simpler for a lot of applications
[16:27]
karstensragei dont serve anything static [16:28]
mhoranup_the_irons: I'd still help you with an NYC DC! [16:28]
up_the_ironsmhoran: I appreciate it :) [16:29]

BryceBotYouTube video: "The Muppet Movie - El Sleezo Cafe (Extended Scene)" by StephenTheLoon [16:32]
up_the_ironswait how did i do that ;) [16:33]
brycecI assume it was the mention of latency. /s [16:41]

brycecI didn't either, didn't care. I know of the Muppets, and it seemed perfectly senseless that the Muppets would be discussing as specific and computer-y a topic as network latency. Hence the sarcasm/joke. [17:10]
mercutiooh /s is sarcasm [17:12]
brycechttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony_punctuation#Other_typography [17:13]
BryceBotIrony punctuation :: Irony punctuation is any proposed form of notation used to denote irony or sarcasm in text. Written English lacks a standard way to mark irony, and several forms of punctuation have been proposed. Among the oldest and most frequently attested are the percontation point proposed by English printer Henry Denham in the 1580s, and the irony mark, used by Marcellin Jobard and French poet Alcanter de Brahm during the 19th century.. [17:13]
brycec@ud /s [17:13]
BryceBot/s: Indicates the presence of sarcasm. Example: "Man, I wish George Bush could take another 4 years, especially after his work on torture- who'd have thought such a fair and moral decision could have been made?r/s" [17:13]
mercutiosomehow in my mind i had just changed /s to /stupid
sarcasm is the lowest form of wit :)
[17:14]
up_the_ironsmake sense :) [17:25]
sjacksoin the clip, a man is thrown bodily out of a sketchy tavern, complains about how awful it is, and when asked by Kermit "Why not complain to the owner?" growls in response "I am the owner."
it's an imperfect reference, though, because we very rarely have bar fights here!
[17:28]
up_the_ironsup_the_irons throws a mug at sjackso ! [17:29]

mnathaniI am a newbie when it comes to both freebsd and zfs, I managed to get zfs on root as the installer had an option and it was pretty easy. [19:41]
mercutioi wonder when ubuntu will add zfs root to installer
maybe it has for the next release
[19:55]
