mike-burnsGlobal warming. [13:31]
mercutiook that's just bizare, 9c at 2 am is warmest time of day? [13:31]
mike-burnsHa. I can't explain that one.
The sun is mostly set at this time of year, so I guess the weather just does what it wants.

mercutiosunset at 3 pm? [13:33]
brycecbrycec assumes cloud cover is involved [13:33]
mercutiobrycec: that'd make sense [13:33]
brycecI always hated cloudy days+nights where I grew up because it meant the next day would be even hotter - the clouds served as a blanket and didn't allow the heat to escape overnight. [13:34]
mercutioahh
my old city had taht problem with pollution
ie winter problem rather than summer problem
not made better by people with fires etc
[13:35]
brycecYeah we had pollution and no-burn days/nights too. but that was less of a day-to-day problem, just ongoing stuff. the clouds/heat thing was noticeable day to day. [13:37]

mnathani_its that time of year again and I am looking out for a deal on a wild card SSL. Any suggestions? [15:41]
mercutioit's cheaper to buy many non-wildcard unless you need a lot of subdomains.
that free ssl thing is in open beta now
i haven't tried it yet
normally i buy certs from namecheap, because they're cheap
but positivessl seems to be $94/year there
where non wildcard is $9/year
so even if you want 6 domains or such, it's cheaper to buy many, and it's arguably more secure.
in that if one gets compromised they don't all get compromised. (but if you're running everything on one server it doesn't make so much difference, and it may make it more likely that you leave files in insecure directory or such)
[15:45]
......................................... (idle for 3h22mn)
mnathani_mercutio: yea 1 server at the moment [19:10]
mercutiowell you have to ask yourself if you really need that many domain names :)
i suppose it's "easier"
than managing multiple certs.
[19:14]
mnathani_over time I would be adding additional subdomains, not to mention the ones already configured with my existing wildcard ssl. And it is easier to manage a single cert for all subdomains. [19:22]

erraticyo
was wondering if there was something that had to be set up on arp's end for the /48 & fe80::/64 routing to take place
I setup my interface but then set an ip address on another interface and it didn't work
guess I could look at some packet caps but this seemed to work seemless last time and my account was off for awhile
[19:50]
brycecYes there is.
Normally ARP provides your gateway as a 2000:/3 address, but if you're getting a /48 from ARP, your gateway is a link-local fe80:: address
http://support.arpnetworks.com/kb/main/what-is-the-difference-between-my-ipv6-64-assigned-space-and-48-allocated-space
[19:52]
erraticyeah I found that, I used to have this setup now I can't figure it out anymore xD
I assigned fe80::/64 to eth0
then 2607:f2f8:a2c4:f00f::1/64 to a GRE tunnel I setup..
[19:56]
brycecIf this is a new account/address block than before, they're going to have to setup their end before it'll work for you... [19:58]
erraticit should be the same, the only thing is I let my account go inactive for a couple of months like I think it went inactive in july then I logged in and set it back up late last month
and my /28 is still routed it seems
oh hmm maybe its not
wait yeah it is.
yeah so the agg is prob still in the table
unless they took it out for some reason but left the ipv4 agg
[19:59]
mercutioerratic: send a ticket in if you want to check.
you should be able to ping6 fe80::1 though
if you're routing between interfaces you probably have to have forwarding enabled too
[20:08]
erraticyeah
fe80::/64 dev eth0 proto kernel metric 256

brycecerratic: fix your interface IP 20:15:20 brycec | I think that should be fe80::2/64, btw [20:20]
erraticsorry about that :S thanks for showing me that though :) [20:20]
brycecfe80::1 is routing traffic to fe80::2, not fe80:: [20:20]
erraticinet6 fe80::2/64 scope link on eth0? [20:23]
mercutioi've been tracing you and 'm not even getting a response back from your vm it seems
let alone the other end of gre tunnel.
[20:25]
erraticlooking at a packet dump when I ping6 fe80::1%eth0 I am seeing 2607:f2f8:add0::2 > 2607:f2f8:a2c4:f00f::1: [icmp6 sum ok] ICMP6, echo request, seq 59012
yeah the other end isnt setup yet you should be able to ping6 2607:f2f8:a2c4:f00f::1: though presumably
minus the trailing :..
[20:27]
mercutiohah that's the ping i left running erratic
mercutio stopped it for you
you did enable forwarding right?
and judging by eth0 you're using linux. so check iptables FORWAD table too
s/FORWAD/FORWARD/
[20:28]
BryceBot<mercutio> and judging by eth0 you're using linux. so check iptables FORWARD table too [20:32]
erraticyep default policy accept and net.ipv{4,6}.forwarding = 1
I might have to try tearing down the gre tunnel
and seeinf I can get it to work some how
[20:33]
mercutiomake that ipv6tables
err ip6tables
ip6tables -vL -n
and check forward policy is accept, or has rules to allow traffic through
if the gre tunnel is working, you can try running a trace through it, and then tcpdump on the external interface to make sure it's going out
also if you're routing your ipv6 traffic back out again from the tunnel you probably have to route it it back via the tunnel or your isp will drop it. (or your isp may not even have ipv6)

thanks for the help guys :)
actually helps more than you know this is good stuff to know
[21:08]
mercutioyou have no default route?
was that your issue?
it's kind of werid how you can default route with just 2000::/3 when used to ipv4
[21:13]
brycecI for one love that public unicast can be expressed so simply :D
unlike ipv4 with its interspersed RFC1918
[21:19]

erraticIm curious to ask what is arp using for .. I guess layer 2/3
just 802.1q?
or vxlan or something
I just read about vxlan I was wondering myself, I dont get to wonder about things like that too often though unfortunately
[22:46]
brycecvxlan != vlans
for layer 1 ARP has copper plugged into switches (except for fibre interlinks). On top of that are VLANs, 1 per customer. Nothing fancy.
ARP will need to look into better scalability such as using vxland, but right now it's pure 802.1q
[22:49]
mnathani_s/vxland/vxlan [22:53]
BryceBot<brycec> ARP will need to look into better scalability such as using vxlan, but right now it's pure 802.1q [22:53]
brycecheh [22:53]
erraticwell 1001 vlans per trunk termination thats like... a lot of hosts for a single host I would imagine.. [22:53]
brycecbrycec is reaching over things to type, always makes for fun typos
"a lot of hosts for a single host" I have no idea what you mean
(nor how you arrived at 1001 as a number)
[22:54]
mnathani_cisco switches go up 4000+ vlans if I remember correctly [22:55]
erraticuntagged [22:55]
brycecwhy would anything be untagged????!! [22:55]
erratictrunks carry up to 1001 [22:55]
mnathani_perhaps management traffic could be untagged?
using the native vlan
[22:56]
brycecDepends on the switch. Some crappier/cheaper switches can only handle X many simultaneous VLANs. Decent gear, like ARP's Cisco switches handles the full 4096 possible VLANs at once. [22:57]
mnathani_not cisco switches if you are on dedicated ARP metal hosts
http://irclogger.arpnetworks.com/irclogger_log/arpnetworks?date=2014-08-19,Tue&sel=51#l47
Metal customers get 1 Gbps to s1.lax, through a pair of Foundry switches (s8.lax and s9.lax).
[22:58]
brycecheh, though s1.lax is still Cisco gear :p
(At least based on the MAC of my gateway)

but thats just my personal shit
work is a different story entirely.
...you had mentioned gigabit uplinks and the very idea of that is .... completely reasonable I keep forgetting.
I think the "I need faster" thing is something that Im sorta programmed to think at the same time, I have to question whether or not I'm being taken advantage of
