mercutiooh brycec cloudflare peering is up [09:36]
brycecOoooh nifty
Looks like arp->any2ix.coresite.com
[09:37]
mercutioyeah
any2ix is peering exchange
[09:37]
brycecRight. Such a short, sexy route
There were more ARP hops than anything else
174.136.103.129 s7.lax.arpnetworks.com r1.lax.arpnetworks.com any2ix.coresite.com 104.27.134.131(dst)
[09:38]
mercutioheh i have one less hop from home
the path back should actually be one hop less
[09:39]
brycecIPv6 is still even shorter :)
Heh not that mtr shows that

milkiprisons are probably cheap. land value tends to be much lower [19:55]
mercutioyeah i bet the land where arp is at is worth a lot. [19:55]

RandalSchwartzso... I have a karma go hotspot. They allow "guests" to get 100MB free if they submit contact info, and then I get 100MB free when that happens. They determine if it's a new "guest" by Mac address. I think you can see where this is going.
I'll never pay for network access again!
and it uses sprint, 3g, 4g, lte, which has a pretty solid coverage in the US.
[20:42]
mercutio100mb won't last long [20:48]
RandalSchwartzno, but then I type "newmac" and repeat.
I get 100mb as the fake user, and 100mb is added to my "legit" account.
so if I don't mind being interrupted, I stay as a series of "guests"
but if I need continuity I log in as "me"
I've been thinking through how they could block this, and I don't think they can.
except maybe round-trip confirmation of the email addresses I use as a guest.
or cookies. both of which are defeatable.
[20:50]
brycecThat's roughly 28 zettabytes!
And if that rolls over daily, HOOOBOY!
[20:55]
RandalSchwartzI'm not sure how the hotspot stores MACs
I presume it's some sort of LRU cache
[20:56]
brycecWell even if it's 28ZB lifetime usage, you're doing pretty good [20:56]
RandalSchwartzheh
I keep wondering if the Karma people will block this, but I don't think it's possible as long as they offer these passwordless hotspots to do lead generation
Ok.. just rolled over from one guest to another. Easy peasy.
and now my "legit" user got another 100MB.
and another @example.com address added to their lead database. :)
[20:56]
mercutioit seems abusive to me [21:09]
RandalSchwartzabusing them? [21:10]
mercutioyes
maybe it's a fixed table and you'll overload it :)
[21:10]
RandalSchwartzheh
yeah, I fully expect them to work this out eventually
but I don't know how they will.
[21:11]
mercutioand they'll be like why do all these users keep going to www.randalschwartz.com [21:11]
RandalSchwartzI never go there, so there. :) [21:11]
mercutiooh stonehenge.com :)
i googled after heh
[21:11]
RandalSchwartzbut the pattern of my accesses might be a clue.
but that'd require a lot more data for the "guests"
[21:12]
mercutiothere used to be phone numbers going around the place that when you rung them you'd get a dial tone in a different city
you could say it's just a phone number, but abusing it is probably strictly speaking still illegal
you'd think they'd have a password or something at least :)
they're probably not around anymore
people used to just ring all the phone numbers in an area code to see what was at the other end
[21:12]
hmm php7 coming out tomorrow [21:21]
brycecOh I didn't realize that every new mac resulted in a total of 200MB of data, so that's 56ZB :D (feels weird to see ZB as a unit) [21:24]
RandalSchwartzheh [21:25]
brycecI'm a bit surprised you aren't tunneling/VPNing though, if for no other reason than to alleviate interrupted connections.
I mean sure ARP doesn't give you 56ZB/month of bandwidth :/
[21:25]
mercutiothe internet won't go faster enough to download that much anyway [21:26]
RandalSchwartzthe login process after "newmac" has a pretty long cycle time. [21:26]
brycecmercutio: yeah, 21PB/s [21:26]
mercutio21PB/sec?
what
[21:27]
brycecbrycec was just figuring that [21:27]
mercutioi bet he's lucky if he gets 20 megabit [21:27]
brycecThat's how fast you'd need to go to use 56ZB/month [21:27]
mercutiomercutio doesn't bet too much just in case [21:27]
brycecI bet my life savings RandalSchwartz doesn't get 21PB/s through his hotspot
What *are* the fastest interlink speeds commonly used, 40gbps?
my mind is going numb figuring these astronomical numbers
[21:27]
RandalSchwartzheh
not at 5 megabit down/up
[21:29]
brycec(it would take 50 days to transfer 21PB over a 40gbps link, that's... nowhere near reaching 56ZB/month) [21:30]
RandalSchwartzI'm back on my "legit" user, after having used 4 guest users [21:30]
mercutiobrycec: that's assuming you have hosts you can download at that speed from, and storage speed to save the data.
oh, have you guys ever tried dslreports for speed test?
it shows buffer bloat etc. and doesn't require flash like speedtest.net
[21:30]
brycecpr0n hosts are usually pretty well set for storage and transit...
I have not
[21:31]
mercutioi have minimal download buffer bloat, but 270 msec up [21:31]
