whats a good wireless access point that supports 802.11ac? I don't need the router / NAT portion Im looking at something like this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0ED-000J-00013CVF so any2ix blew up briefly just then i use a tp-link archer c7 myself i find it fine. i just plug into lan port http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704177&cm_re=tp-link_archer-_-33-704-177-_-Product something like that ^ nope oh hangon i was looking at first will look at second :) its a c7 so probably :-) yaeh like that except it was $60 US they tax us a lot here in Canada i got it last xmas i think if you're not in a rush it might go on sale it's $93.82 US on amazon atm which tells me i bought it dec 13 so it probably came just after xmas and it was $58.99 the newer stuff may be better now I got a quote for cisco AP like $500 i upgraded from unifi uap-ac which is more expensive, but was making whining noises and actually went slower lol if you're looking at "enterprise AP's" then you should start with Ubiquiti gear http://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-UniFi-Enterprise-System/dp/B00D80J2XU Amazon: "Ubiquiti Networks UniFi AC Enterprise WiFi System - UAP-AC" interesting so that's what i was using. and yeah i prefer the tp-link the unifi one would run hot, and it would crash a lot and i had to reboot it and it would randomly stop working on one band can't remember if it was 2.4 or 5 i am wired for my desktops. i have two of the tp-links Don't think I've ever heard bad things about Unifi gear, not that I've heard a ton and if using the tp-link as client at distnace can do 200 megabit easy. brycec: the non ac stuff is better really unifi helps you when you want seamless handover etc. i did firmware upgrade but it was still a pita i went from like 1 megabit to 5 megabit with difficult to reach place with tp-link but it's one wall away from where i can get like 150 megabit but 150 megabit meant moving the router like a foot if you have non moving clients it's easier to get good speeds. like that room has a few areas that are not so great but generally if in good placement can get 100 megabit easy on single band 433 megabit 802.11ac and 200 to 250 megabit in same room my laptop does about 300 megabit or so 40MB/sec whatever that is 320 megabit real performance single thread. it was getting that speed from my proxy for package installs :) i could also get around 600 megabit in same room with two of them back to back. but nfs was way slower than with gigabit ethernet mercutio: is your tp-link archer black or white? black are there white ones? it's v2 or v3? i can't remember which it's not v1 v1 doesn't work with openwrt. one of them has openwrt, the other doesn't. oh it's c8 that's white, c8 is broadcom rather than atheros with faster cpu. and i don't think is compatible with openwrt. the store I went to today had 2 c7 one black one white the guy there wasnt too sure of the difference other than the white was $10 more expensive setup was a breeze disabled dhcp, assigned an ip in my subnet, set wifi ssid name and password you got black? 15Megabyte / sec file transfer from wireless laptop downloading off wired gigabite pc that's pretty much what i did s/gigabite/gigabit 15Megabyte / sec file transfer from wireless laptop downloading off wired gigabit pc that's slow yea, I got black does the laptop have 802.11ac? it does 433 or 866? there are two? I already have 3 ssid names in my household just use a different one for 5 ghz and 2.4 another one for 5 ghz would make residents go nuts and you may want to add _optout_nomap to the end too ok well with windows there's a 5 ghz preference thing i think too it just doesn't seem to work very well was it using 5 ghz? 3 different access points / wireless access points you can name different access points the same not sure about the 5 ghz i set the password on all of my access points to be the same then they need to match up with aes / tkip etc wpa2 well it makes it easier for people to remember the password password is the same ssids are different i don't think they need to match up with windows i think the protection is pretty weak there are iphones, ipods, windows phone , several android as well yeah do you have two 5 ghz routesr? ime higher frequency works better than lower but don't know what channel restriction is like there yes 2 5ghz one is a cisco access point other is this new tplink yeah you allow high ones so you can use 149 through 165 you need 80 mhz for 802.11ac third is a mikrotik which I am checking doesn't matter where you start really oh you can't use low channel numbers tplink is set to auto right now well you can use every second one yeh i se to manual set and i'm using 157 or such i think it was defaulting to 42 or something and going slower but if it's set to canada it shouldn't do that i'm on 153 Acer Aspire R 13 R7-371T-59ZK Signature Edition Laptop thats the laptop manual should say which 802.11ac it supports I liked that the TP-Link router didnt complain when adding IP: 10.10.100.100 /16 most other routers force /24 and usually in 192.168 range
