mnathani_whats a good wireless access point that supports 802.11ac? I don't need the router / NAT portion [13:55]
Im looking at something like this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0ED-000J-00013CVF [14:01]
mercutioso any2ix blew up briefly just then [14:12]
***dne has quit IRC (Quit: WeeChat 1.3) [14:17]
mercutioi use a tp-link archer c7 myself
i find it fine. i just plug into lan port
[14:18]
mnathani_http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704177&cm_re=tp-link_archer-_-33-704-177-_-Product
something like that ^
[14:19]
mercutionope
oh hangon
i was looking at first
will look at second :)
[14:19]
mnathani_its a c7 so probably :-) [14:20]
mercutioyaeh like that except it was $60 US [14:20]
mnathani_they tax us a lot here in Canada [14:20]
mercutioi got it last xmas i think
if you're not in a rush it might go on sale
it's $93.82 US on amazon atm
which tells me i bought it dec 13
so it probably came just after xmas
and it was $58.99
the newer stuff may be better now
[14:20]
mnathani_I got a quote for cisco AP
like $500
[14:22]
mercutioi upgraded from unifi uap-ac
which is more expensive, but was making whining noises and actually went slower
[14:22]
bryceclol if you're looking at "enterprise AP's" then you should start with Ubiquiti gear [14:23]
mercutiohttp://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-UniFi-Enterprise-System/dp/B00D80J2XU [14:23]
BryceBotAmazon: "Ubiquiti Networks UniFi AC Enterprise WiFi System - UAP-AC" [14:23]
brycecinteresting [14:23]
mercutioso that's what i was using.
and yeah i prefer the tp-link
the unifi one would run hot, and it would crash a lot
and i had to reboot it
and it would randomly stop working on one band
can't remember if it was 2.4 or 5
i am wired for my desktops.
i have two of the tp-links
[14:23]
brycecDon't think I've ever heard bad things about Unifi gear, not that I've heard a ton [14:24]
mercutioand if using the tp-link as client at distnace can do 200 megabit easy.
brycec: the non ac stuff is better
really unifi helps you when you want seamless handover etc.
i did firmware upgrade but it was still a pita
i went from like 1 megabit to 5 megabit with difficult to reach place with tp-link
but it's one wall away from where i can get like 150 megabit
but 150 megabit meant moving the router like a foot
if you have non moving clients it's easier to get good speeds.
like that room has a few areas that are not so great
but generally if in good placement can get 100 megabit easy on single band 433 megabit 802.11ac
and 200 to 250 megabit in same room
my laptop does about 300 megabit or so
40MB/sec whatever that is
320 megabit real performance single thread.
it was getting that speed from my proxy for package installs :)
i could also get around 600 megabit in same room with two of them back to back.
but nfs was way slower than with gigabit ethernet

***DanyG has joined #arpnetworks [21:56]
mercutioblack
are there white ones?
it's v2 or v3?
i can't remember which
it's not v1
v1 doesn't work with openwrt.
one of them has openwrt, the other doesn't.
oh it's c8 that's white, c8 is broadcom rather than atheros with faster cpu.
and i don't think is compatible with openwrt.
[21:59]
***DanyG has left "Closing Window" [22:08]
mnathani_the store I went to today had 2 c7 one black one white
the guy there wasnt too sure of the difference other than the white was $10 more expensive
setup was a breeze
disabled dhcp, assigned an ip in my subnet, set wifi ssid name and password
[22:17]
mercutioyou got black? [22:19]
mnathani_15Megabyte / sec file transfer from wireless laptop downloading off wired gigabite pc [22:19]
mercutiothat's pretty much what i did [22:19]
mnathani_s/gigabite/gigabit [22:19]
BryceBot<mnathani_> 15Megabyte / sec file transfer from wireless laptop downloading off wired gigabit pc [22:19]
mercutiothat's slow [22:19]
mnathani_yea, I got black [22:19]
mercutiodoes the laptop have 802.11ac? [22:19]
mnathani_it does [22:19]
mercutio433 or 866? [22:20]
mnathani_there are two? [22:20]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [22:20]
mnathani_the plot thickens [22:20]
mercutioyeah [22:20]
mnathani_probably the slower one
not sure though
[22:20]
mercutioit's like how lots of cellphones do 60 megabit or something wireless n
so phones and cheap laptops are often 433
like my tablet is 433
my laptop is 866
[22:20]
mnathani_enough to say its ac
but not the full 866
[22:20]
mercutioit's probably the faster one
yeah you can only really hope for half the connected rate
laptops can be kind of special though
often their antenna situation is far from ideal
and so like if you sit at a desk with the laptop, if you sit facing the opposite direction at the desk it may give twice the speed
[22:20]

mercutioi spun around in my chhair when i was checking [22:21]
mnathani_that has 802.11ac [22:21]
mercutioyeah chromecast is likely to be 433
15 megabytes/sec isn't bad though
more is always nicer though
[22:22]
mnathani_windows file transfer
4 gig iso
[22:22]
mercutiothe other thing is that 5 ghz channel selection can make a difference, and often naming your 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz ssid's different names helps force 5 ghz [22:22]
mnathani_ftp might be faster [22:22]
mercutiobecause even if you have -20 dbm less signal with 5 ghz it's often better. [22:22]
mnathani_I already have 3 ssid names in my household [22:23]
mercutiojust use a different one for 5 ghz and 2.4 [22:23]
mnathani_another one for 5 ghz would make residents go nuts [22:23]
mercutioand you may want to add _optout_nomap to the end too
ok well with windows there's a 5 ghz preference thing i think too
it just doesn't seem to work very well
was it using 5 ghz?
[22:23]
mnathani_3 different access points / wireless access points [22:24]
mercutioyou can name different access points the same [22:24]
mnathani_not sure about the 5 ghz [22:24]
mercutioi set the password on all of my access points to be the same [22:24]
mnathani_then they need to match up with aes / tkip etc
wpa2
[22:24]
mercutiowell it makes it easier for people to remember the password [22:24]
mnathani_password is the same
ssids are different
[22:24]
mercutioi don't think they need to match up with windows
i think the protection is pretty weak
[22:25]
mnathani_there are iphones, ipods, windows phone , several android as well [22:25]
mercutioyeah
do you have two 5 ghz routesr?
ime higher frequency works better than lower
but don't know what channel restriction is like there
[22:25]
mnathani_yes 2 5ghz
one is a cisco access point
other is this new tplink
[22:26]
mercutioyeah you allow high ones
so you can use 149 through 165
you need 80 mhz for 802.11ac
[22:27]
mnathani_third is a mikrotik which I am checking [22:27]
mercutiodoesn't matter where you start really
oh
you can't use low channel numbers
[22:27]
mnathani_tplink is set to auto right now [22:28]
mercutiowell you can use every second one
yeh i se to manual
set
and i'm using 157 or such i think
it was defaulting to 42 or something
and going slower
but if it's set to canada it shouldn't do that
i'm on 153
[22:28]

mnathani_Acer Aspire R 13 R7-371T-59ZK Signature Edition Laptop
thats the laptop
manual should say which 802.11ac it supports
[22:46]
I liked that the TP-Link router didnt complain when adding IP: 10.10.100.100 /16
most other routers force /24 and usually in 192.168 range
