awyeahHey how do all of you back up your freebsd boxes? I'm using duplicity/duply, but it's a pain in the ass. Anything simpler? [06:37]
grodydepends what you're backing up.. most of my FreeBSD box are in VPS with small initial disks and use rsync to a main backup server [06:45]
awyeahWell ideally I'd like to back up the whole thing, which is what I'm doing with duply/duplicity right now
because otherwise I will invariably forget to put a certain directory in the backup
[06:50]
***relrod_ has joined #arpnetworks
relrod_ has quit IRC (Changing host)
relrod_ has joined #arpnetworks
[07:00]
relrod_ is now known as relrod [07:06]
grodythere are the built in options dump & restore which can simplyfy file system backps across a network
havent used them much myself, but they are quite effective
[07:12]
awyeahYeah I've used those on my box locally here, but only to play with. Maybe I should give them another look [07:13]
grodyaye, just remember to run them through SSH tunnels though (iirc they dont have network crypot built in)
crypto*
i've long deployed a different strategy now where i use ezjails.. i can fresh install and dump the jails back in a short space of time.. save so much hassle
in the outer OS, use as little as possible - that way you really only have one folder to backup
[07:14]
awyeahthat's a really good idea
all my web stuff is in an ezjaiul.
ezjail.
But my database, dns, mail, that stuff is on the main box.
basically, other than mail, anything that accepts incoming connections from the world gets jailed.
[07:18]
mercutioWOW
microsoft donated to openbsd.
[07:21]
...... (idle for 29mn)
grodysweet
do remember reading they had lecci bill issues earlier this year
glad my electric costs aren't that much

aka "More than Google" heh
[08:16]
................... (idle for 1h32mn)
mike-burnsI put everything in git repos, then back up ~git using tarsnap. [09:48]
awyeahhmm that's an interesting strategy mike-burns [09:55]
mike-burns~% ls ~git | wc -l
53
[09:56]
...... (idle for 27mn)
awyeahthat's a lot of repos [10:23]
....... (idle for 31mn)
brycecYou think 53 is a lot? lol...
(ie. "that's so cute")
[10:54]
..... (idle for 23mn)
grodyhah
never thought of using git for backups
reminds me.. got to pull a large backup transatlantic for an upgrade (which is going to nuke my setup again)
[11:17]
............. (idle for 1h2mn)
bloody heck my mail servers reject an awful lot of connections (mostly RBL based rejects) [12:21]

mercutiobrycec: i saw it said gold, but couldn't see anywhere what that meant [13:39]
brycecmercutio: more than $25.000.
(assuming you're talking about the MSFT donation to the OBSD Foundation)
[13:39]
mercutiocool well it looked like that was how much it used to cost them normally
err more than
and now they hav lots of money :/
[13:39]
brycecDon't ever let that discourage you from donating though. There will be a time when the corps don't donate and they'll rely on their bank [13:40]
mercutioalthough i'm sure they prefer to sepend more of it :)
yeh there was bank stuff before
err spending of previous mone
y
shit i need my coffee :)
[13:40]
....... (idle for 30mn)
awyeahI have often thought of using git for etc folders. [14:11]
brycecThere's git-annex too which tracks the changes, but doesn't store the files themselves. [14:12]
awyeahinteresting
So can you still go back to previous revs?
[14:14]
brycecThat's my understanding [14:14]
.... (idle for 16mn)
mercutioyou can always just add some files to it
you don't have to track everything.. just do backups for things that don't change?
but yeah if you store /etc/passwd everywhere you may be reducing your security
well /etc/shadow
i like keys over passwords anyway
[14:30]
wow, another 0 day flash exploit [14:37]
awyeahright that's true.
But I could .gitignore passwd and master.passwd
[14:39]

mercutiothat's much warmer than it feels :) [14:44]
brycecTo be fair, with such a breeze it's going to feel much cooler than that.
a la "windchill"
[14:50]
awyeahI've been to AKL
nice airport.
[14:51]
...... (idle for 27mn)
mercutioawyeah: location of the airport sucks :)
there's like nowhere good anywhere nearby
ever since android 5 my phone seems to have charging issues
but it never feels very warm
[15:18]
awyeahoh
well I never left that airport
it was just a connection on my way to Wellington.
[15:26]
mercutioyeh
i haven't been to wellington airport actually
[15:29]

RandalSchwartzthe hotel bar here in Porto Alegre is selling "shots" of Smirnoff Vodka for about $4.50 US (14 Reals).
Except, I don't think they know what a shot is. I'm getting a largish glass filled with what I estimate to be 3 to 4 shots each time.
so I'm getting 4.5 to 6 ounces of decent vodka for that price... in a hotel.
[16:59]
awyeahThat's a pretty good deal. [17:09]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [17:09]
awyeahhave them give you some cranberry juice with your 'shots' [17:09]
RandalSchwartzcannot consume cranberry juice
has nothing useful for me
well, maybe minor micronutrients
but the macronutrients overshaodw
[17:21]
hazardousi enjoy cranberry juice, but only small amounts at a time
not for nutrients. just the taste
[17:24]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [17:24]
RandalSchwartzyeah. I've learned that "just the taste" can kill me, slowly. [17:24]
mnathani_mercutio: check out this image on your 4k monitor when you get a chance and let me know what you think : http://mnathani.com/uploads/2015-07-08_panorama-take2.jpg
Its a view out my apartment
[17:26]
RandalSchwartzYeah - I just paid $15 USD for about 2/3 of a Smirnoff Vodka bottle, and I'm in a hotel. [17:31]
mercutioit looks pretty coool the colours suck though
wow it looks so much sharper on 4k than 1440p
heh i just got tinted glasses, a few pairs, so now i'm trying with different tints
amber tint seems to make it look more defined..
[17:38]
mnathani_if you zoom in to the top left area, you should see the cn tower [17:41]
mercutiowhem i zoom in it's really soft [17:42]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [17:42]
mercutiothere are a lot of trees
hmm amber tints make my white levels on my two monitors look totally different
[17:42]
mnathani_I should do another one in the fall [17:43]
mercutiobut normally i don't notice [17:43]
RandalSchwartzI dated a girl named Amber Tints once... [17:43]
mercutioi need to fix my colours i think
are you using HDR?
i was curious if 10% yellow tint would make any noticable difference to comptuer use
[17:44]
RandalSchwartzThat doesn't look HDR [17:45]
mnathani_dont think so [17:45]
RandalSchwartzthe whites are blown out [17:45]
mercutioyeh that's what i thought [17:45]
RandalSchwartzthe darks also [17:45]
mercutioi think that's why i thought colours looked bad
i'm used to HDR for big pictures :)
[17:46]
RandalSchwartztypical 5 to 7 f-stops
just a pano
[17:46]
mnathani_this one was done with a simple point and shoot [17:46]
RandalSchwartznice pano though [17:46]
mnathani_tripod helped [17:47]
RandalSchwartzheh... all of mine have been hand-held
but with pano assist
no wait... the early ones all just "doing it"
[17:47]
mnathani_what do you use to stitch the images? [17:48]
RandalSchwartztrying to find the seattle skyline that I did with a pano
something on flickr
[17:48]
brycecNeat, mnathani_ [17:49]
mnathani_brycec: thanks
Here is a 2 minute timelapse as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9qw7SNrWtY

BryceBotYouTube video: "2 Minute Clip - View From 20th Floor in Toronto ON" by Mansoor Nathani [17:55]
RandalSchwartzcanadian... is it in metric? [17:56]
brycecAnd now I have mnathani_'s address (shy of the apartment number, though that wouldn't take long to "brute force") [18:01]
mnathani_lol brycec [18:01]
brycec(It's what I do, I solve puzzles) [18:02]
mnathani_a simple whois would have revealed that information if you were so inclined [18:02]
brycec@postal M3A3K7 [18:02]
BryceBotM3A: North York (York Heights / Victoria Village / Parkway East), Ontario, CA [18:02]
brycecgive or take.
(it was easy since I knew the general city, and Rothman's sign+building is so clearly visible)
[18:03]
mercutioheh when i was a kid i used to love stalking people
i grew up a bit and realised that some people might find it intrusive :)
[18:05]
brycecSure sure. [18:06]
mercutioerr by stalking i mean finding out their details etc without asking them
even if i could have easily asked them it was more fun to find out by alternate means
[18:06]
brycecI agree, it's borderline-creepy :) But it's just a puzzle for me. [18:06]
mercutioyeah ditto :) [18:06]
brycecRight, exactly. [18:06]
mercutioit went out of fashion
it's back in fashion now with facebook etc though
[18:06]
brycecha [18:06]
mercutiolike if you have open facebook profile and do a job interview don't be surprised if they check it out [18:07]
brycecI definitely do a quick, cursory Google looking for other work, red flags or commonalities.
Sadly there's no challenge in finding me, since I have some federal licenses that are publicly searchable and required to have my address
[18:07]
mercutioyeh apparently it's really common with low paying jobs now
they check peoples facebook profiles to see if they are disreputable.
(higher turnover etc, more difficult employees etc i suppose)
[18:12]
staticsafehello [18:13]
mercutiohi static [18:14]
staticsafesup [18:15]
mercutionm [18:16]
staticsafeexercising the power of my new GPU [18:17]
mnathani_I doubt IRC is very taxing staticsafe [18:17]
staticsafeheh [18:18]
mercutioheh
i've hardly tested my new gpu
[18:18]
brycecmnathani_: Clearly you've never run retroterm [18:18]
mercutioi got one a while back [18:18]
staticsafebut seriously 6GB of VRAM
staticsafe drools
[18:19]
mercutioi have 4gb vram [18:19]
brycechawt [18:19]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [18:19]
brycecI have 2GB :/ [18:19]
mercutioi played tomb raider
got bored of it quickly
[18:19]
staticsafehttps://www.dropbox.com/s/uferyoyydo9d4fu/2015-07-08%2013.40.52.jpg?dl=0 [18:19]
mercutiobut it looked pretty, i was blown away [18:19]
BryceBotDropbox photo: "https://www.dropbox.com/s/uferyoyydo9d4fu/2015-07-08%2013.40.52.jpg?dl=0" [18:19]
mercutioi didn't have any recent games. i mostly play dota :/
i have no disk space for games atm :(
getting a new ssd
does that work in linux?
last i knew nvidia sucked with linux :(
[18:19]
staticsafenvidia is great on linux [18:21]
mercutiolike it can't boost the clock rates etc. [18:21]
staticsafewell [18:21]
mercutiono fan control
oh i only want to use open source drivers heh
my linux box has radeon 7750
which is sort of ok
it was the best fanless card could get
there may be a better one now though
and on windows 980 can ramp the fan down at low load?
[18:21]
staticsafeyeah thats a common feature [18:22]
mercutioi mean off heh
yeh my r9 290 is pretty quiet at low load
actually it's pretty quiet all the time really
surprising given how power hungry it is
[18:22]
staticsafehrm GPU-Z can't read the sensors on this thing for fan speed [18:23]
mercutiomy fan speed is 20%
but gpu is only 36c
i wish it could spin slower :/
[18:23]
staticsafe57 C [18:24]
mercutiothat'll be fanless then
it probably isn't doing the fan at all atm
[18:24]
staticsafeyeah hold on lemme increase the load [18:24]
mercutiomy core clock / memory clock are going up/down csontstaly
like 20 times/second
i wonder if that's good for it :/
[18:25]
staticsafemercutio: you were right
that is somewhat impressive
[18:25]
mercutiothat's about how hot my 7750 runs
oh it's up to 63c atm
linux has weak power gating support
i really do thing for most desktop linux users intel hd is the way to go :)
so is it good for the video card to constantly bounce between 150 and 1300 mhz
for memory speed
[18:26]
staticsafenot sure how that is an issue
its not constantly jumping
[18:29]
mercutiounstable load on power supply
it's constantly jumping for me
like more than 10x a second
[18:29]
staticsafeo_O [18:30]
mercutioand the power demand is jumping too [18:30]
staticsafemy card is idling at 202.5 Mhz memory clock [18:30]
mercutiohttps://weallsee.net/r9-290.png [18:31]
staticsafethat sounds like a bad driver [18:34]
mercutioit's normal amd driver :/ [18:35]
staticsafemercutio: your load is also spiking it seems [18:38]
mercutioyeah probably chrome
hah
closing chrome fixed the load issue, but it's still bouncing
[18:38]
staticsafeI have GPU acceleration disabled in Chrome and FIrefox because its buggy in both [18:39]
mercutioweird power draw is more constant now even with memory clock all over the place. [18:40]
......... (idle for 41mn)
m0undsstaticsafe: yeah, hw acceleration is horrible in chrome [19:21]
................... (idle for 1h31mn)
mercutiochrome isn't a very good web browser
but none of them are :)
