[17:36] did you check the power cable to it? [17:37] yep, it's fine [17:37] RIP [17:38] i'll build a funeral pyre in my neighbor's yard and burn it [17:38] what card is it? [17:39] sapphire 7970 [17:39] ah [17:39] i've had it for a few years [17:39] time to upgrade? :D [17:39] damn [17:39] i guess [17:39] wasn't planning on it, hahaha [17:39] there's no good upgrades. [17:39] probably just gonna go nvidia [17:39] well not if you want to use linux and open source drivers. [17:39] gtx 960 you could go to [17:40] but it means binary drivers for linux. [17:40] nah, i'd go 970 or 980 [17:40] sounds expensive :/ [17:40] i don't use linux so that's not a problem for me [17:40] i dunno, if oyu're not planning for it.. [17:40] That's what she said!! [17:40] AMD's drivers are a shitshow [17:40] oh right [17:40] yeh in linux amd btu nvidia for windows i reckon [17:40] gtx 970 is probably a good idea for windows. [17:40] by that i just meant i wasn't throwing cash aside to upgrade my gpu, haha [17:40] i have a r9 290 it's not too bad [17:41] does 96hz at 1440p fine. [17:41] that's good [17:41] with everything on high [17:41] yeh the only thing i got to go a bit slow so far is tomb raider. [17:41] on the extreme settings thingy. [17:42] i was blown away by tomb raider tbh [17:42] it's a bit old now, but i hadn't tried anything "rich" [17:42] i got bored of it pretty quick though. i think it's like $10 on steam or something so i don't care that much :) [17:43] yea, i liked it [17:43] damn it's hard to find 4k videos on youtube [17:43] there was some new edition of it released for ps4 and xbox one, so i got a copy of it pretty cheap around xmas [17:44] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e6svwrk2NQ [17:44] YouTube video: "GTX 970 Tomb Raider 4k 3840x2160 Benchmark" by xyz2theb [17:44] there's a guy who does gadget reviews who only uploads in 4k iirc [17:44] that's 1080p@60hz [17:45] tressfx does pretty well w/hair [17:45] i mostly play dota and openttd [17:45] which don't even need a good card :) [17:45] i've been playing the hell out of the witcher 3 [17:46] well, had beeen [17:46] been [17:47] http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/541901441708131299/E97DF67862ACF7E22B831B0B209B1324908BED56/ [18:15] *** raptelan has joined #arpnetworks [18:16] *** raptelan_ has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 264 seconds) [19:32] *** hive-mind has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 272 seconds) [19:48] *** hive-mind has joined #arpnetworks [22:42] @weather yyz [22:42] Toronto-Pearson International, Ontario: Clear 57°F (14°C), Humidity: 31%, Wind: From the SW at 8 MPH -- For more details including the forecast and almanac, see http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=43.67722321,-79.63055420 or re-request this with: @weather -v yyz [22:52] @weather akl [22:52] Auckland International, New Zealand: Mostly Cloudy ☁ 55°F (13°C), Humidity: 77%, Wind: From the WSW at 26 MPH Gusting to 38 MPH -- For more details including the forecast and almanac, see http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=-37.00805664,174.79167175 or re-request this with: @weather -v akl [22:53] damni t feels colder than that. [22:54] you feeling better mercutio?: [22:54] or was that a while back [22:54] mm? [22:54] you said you were sick [22:54] that was aegs ago wasn't it [22:54] may have been some time back [22:55] I guess [22:55] i got up too early today :/ [22:55] adn went to bed too late :/ [22:55] is your day job remote? [22:55] yeh [22:55] or do you go in [22:55] i've been remote for ages. [22:55] it has it's pro's and con's [22:55] thing i most miss is daily lunch walks [22:56] nowhere good to eat in walking distance from here :( [22:56] do you work tickets? [22:56] nope [22:57] manage a team? [22:57] nope [22:57] mostly just fix stuff / do stuff [22:57] respond to questions :) [22:57] communicate via phone or email? [22:57] phone and im [22:58] mostly. [22:58] jabber? [22:58] or lync? [22:58] yeh and skype [22:58] skype is good for talking while doing stuff. [22:58] yea, I really like skype [22:58] prefer it to using my cellphone [22:58] it varies for me. [22:58] I have one of those unlimited* us canada subscriptions [22:59] i like skype for tlaking while doing stuff [22:59] but if i'm just talking to someone phone seems better, cos i can take it outside easily :) [22:59] with a headset [22:59] i feel claustrophobic talking on phones inside [22:59] always have. [22:59] it's kind of weird. [22:59] actuually i muuch prefer talking outside to real life people too normally. [23:00] especially if it's a standing kind of conversation. [23:00] i suppose everyone has their own style. [23:00] is working remote a perk, or necessity (not enough office space for everyone) [23:01] it's because i moved cities. [23:01] ahh [23:01] i used to have an office [23:01] adn i had an office wehn i first moved here. [23:01] in one of those shared office thingys. [23:01] are you guys customers of level3? [23:01] nope. [23:01] any other tier1? [23:01] nope [23:02] but like 3rd tier bandwidth :) [23:02] buy [23:02] even arp is buying level3 through someone else. [23:02] cogent? [23:02] well it's a bit dfiferent here [23:02] because most of the bandwidth is international.. [23:02] I didnt realize that. I thought arp bought level3 directly [23:02] so you tend to buy mixes rather than providers. [23:02] check out the dns on it [23:03] it's via giglinx. [23:03] it's pretty much the same diff [23:03] is ARP too small to buy from level3 direct? [23:03] providers like level3 suck to deal with at smaller commit levels. [23:03] well they'd pay more. [23:03] it's like using an insurance broker. [23:03] you get the same service, but through someone else, and you save money. [23:04] is that kind of like a reseller? [23:04] it's also generally easier to deal with afaik. [23:04] or wholesaler / distributer [23:04] yeh i suppose [23:04] places like level3 vary their prices heaps [23:05] so if you had more time than money you could probably haggle a good deal with them. [23:05] or were buying larger commits. [23:05] bandwidth is like that in general really. [23:05] is hurricane electric big where you are? [23:05] people in the same city may pay twice as much as anohter customer for the same commit level. [23:05] nope. [23:05] they're not even here. [23:06] only verizon are here of international tier1s. [23:06] afaik [23:06] and they don't seem common. [23:06] I would have expected Sprint / ATT [23:06] oh att maybe here i think. [23:06] Telia Sonera maybe [23:06] but in a limited capacity [23:06] sprint got bought out by someone [23:06] ntt is in australia. [23:06] but not here. [23:07] so yeah what usually happens is people buy bandwidth from multiple providers adn then resell it. [23:07] becauuse like you need capacity to auustralia for asia... and the US for ... everything else. [23:07] then one weird thing about here, is that there's domestic capacity too [23:07] so you buy domestic capacity to the two biggest isp's [23:07] from either one of them. [23:07] so it's like at&t and verizon or something [23:08] where you can buy transit to either of them and they peer freely between them. [23:08] but otherwise youu're screwed. [23:08] because they won't freely peer. [23:08] That's what she said!! [23:08] then most of the smaller to medium sized providers all peer freely. [23:09] there's probably as many nz providers peering in nz as there are US providers on any2ix. [23:11] heh i'm rambling now :) [23:12] i don't actually know how much level3 costs. [23:12] but afaik providers like cogent are much cheaper for gigabit burstable on 10 gigabit.
