mnathani_how would I write a bash script that rsyncs a folder from a remote machine to my local box and does it daily - keeping 7 days of backups (1 each day) as well as 7 weeks of backup, 1 each week, and 7 months of backup, 1 for each month? [13:38]
brycecrsnapshot [13:38]
mnathani_so far I have the nightly backup that stores 1 for each day indefinitely [13:38]
brycecIt's easy to get 7-day rotation, just rsync to file.$(date +%M) (or whatever the format for ".Mon" is)
but the rest of that gets complicated
And since you're looking for somewhat complicated rotation schedules (vs indefinite), use a tool that's been around for ages doing this solidly with rsync: http://rsnapshot.org/
[13:39]
RandalSchwartzthat does shared rsync, as I recall
very slick
as in, you rsync only the changes relative to the previous day... it hardlinks in all the unchanged files
the OS automatically does GC that way.

mnathani_will have a closer look at rsnapshot
Thanks
[14:29]
mercutioit's really easy on zfs
you can just do autosnapshotting
and you can expose the snapshots
[14:32]
brycecThough to do that with a remote machine, you're getting into zfs send/recv
(which you can do incrementally with snapshots, but really it's not addressing the specific problem that mnathani_ quoted)
[14:35]
mercutioand -r
well you can still rsync the base ones
and do it on both sides
or just do it on the local machine for example
[14:46]
..... (idle for 20mn)
hmm, is there a way to have easy mail filtering like gmail for normal text clients?
it's actually pretty cool how it can split forums etc up
ie it automatically detects what kind of mail something is

terabithey guys,good evening
does arpnetworks have non u.s. hosting or do you guys have just one data center in the u.s. ?
[16:38]
RandalSchwartzI believe the latter.
since I've asked about that before

RandalSchwartzit's simply a service for people who can mostly support themselves and each other [18:55]
mercutiomore locations would be nice :) [18:58]
up_the_ironsmaybe a location in DE [19:10]
RandalSchwartzdelaware? [19:10]
up_the_ironsGermany [19:10]
RandalSchwartzoh. DE country, not DE state [19:10]
up_the_ironsyeah, wider diversity :)
2 continents, instead of one
[19:15]
RandalSchwartzDiversity... from germans. Hmm. [19:15]
up_the_ironsand, as you probably know, some of the largest IXs are there [19:16]
acf___up_the_irons, so when you get another location
will you announce the same IP blocks at both LAX and the other one
or have separate IP blocks?
[19:17]
up_the_ironsprobably not, otherwise i'd have to have a tunnel between here and there [19:17]
acf___ok, makes sense
I was thinking about anycast possibilities..
[19:18]
up_the_ironswell, in that case, yes :)
but i don't have any anycast services right now.
oh, but i suppose i could then offer it
[19:19]
acf___it would be super cool imo :D [19:19]
up_the_irons2 hosts (either VMs or dedi) in either location + the same IP for both
hmmmm
HMMMMM
i wonder what the demand for that would be
[19:19]
acf___you'd be the only supplier [19:20]
up_the_ironsreally? i'd think others would have this already... [19:20]
acf___https://www.hostvirtual.com/anycast-bgp-cloud/
^ the only other one I remember
[19:20]
up_the_ironsah yeah, i've seen that [19:21]
mercutio+1 for anycast.
hostvirtual have huge setup fees acf.
[19:21]
staticsafethey do indeed
i asked them for a quote once
[19:22]
mercutioi did look into it [19:22]
up_the_ironsup_the_irons packs up for home [19:22]
acf___yea. I read that other places [19:22]
up_the_ironsbbl [19:22]
mercutioup_the_irons: normally would add an extra anycast ip to the user.
i think demand would be low, but only needs a /24 for it...
i'd vote for east coast before germany myself.
[19:22]
NiTeMaRebuyvm is the only other with anycast that i know of [19:24]
mercutiobuyvm had huge ddos issues
heaps of network outages.
[19:24]
NiTeMaRenever used them i just remember seeing them brag about it [19:24]
mercutiothey also apparently leaked routes onto any2ix recently.
i think a few people do anycsat.
it's just that i prioritise having a good network over anycast.
[19:24]
NiTeMaRecan't wait to get out of this hotel [19:26]
RandalSchwartzjust walk out. :) [19:29]
brycecRandalSchwartz++ [19:38]
NiTeMaRena i'm here for a week for work orientation
then i get to go home and work from home

is anyone else here using ublock? [21:25]
staticsafei am [21:25]
mercutioit's amazing, right?
i just tried it
night'n day faster than abp
[21:25]
staticsafeindeed it is [21:26]
m0undsi don't think i've used abp w/chrome or chromium [21:29]
mercutioit was misbehaving and so i disabled it [21:30]
m0undsi've just always used chrome adblock, since it was around before abp published their version for chrome/chromium and safari [21:30]
mercutioand omg so much faster :/ [21:30]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [21:30]
mercutioso i tried to look for alternatives, ublock is really recent.
yaeh i've tried both, they both suck.
[21:30]
m0undsabp's memory use is almost twice that of chrome adblock
adblock's memory use is ~30MB more than ublock
(i just installed it and ran through a bunch of sites)
[21:31]
mercutiodid you find ublock smoother
apparently abp adds to individual pages memory usage too
[21:31]
m0undsit seems faster [21:32]
mercutioand not any worse for ads right?
so seems a win/win :)
[21:32]
m0undsnot that i've seen
it uses the same lists
[21:32]
mercutioahh [21:32]
m0undsi hate that easylist has a 5 day update period defined in the list [21:33]

brycecSo which am I "supposed" to use - uBlock or uBlock Origin? [21:39]
mercutioi'm uusing origin
origin is the newer version
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UBlock
[21:40]
BryceBotUBlock :: uBlock (pronounced you-block /ˈjuːˌblɒk/) is a free and open source, cross-platform browser extension for content-filtering, including ad-blocking. It is available for several browsers, including Chromium, Firefox, and Safari. The extension has received praise from technology websites for ostensibly lighter resource usage in comparison to rival extensions as well as support as an alternative to them. Raymond Hill, the... [21:40]
brycecYeah I wasn't able to discern the difference between uBlock and Origin [21:40]
mercutioso the initial release was only june 2014
i just installted the top link tbh
on google
i found this page afterwards :)
[21:40]
bryceclol [21:41]
mercutiobut it was origin [21:41]
brycecLooking at release dates and version numbers, looks like Origin is akin to a beta channel
0970 vs 0940
10 May vs 5 May
[21:41]
mercutiohard to know
oh it does look that way
oh
ublock origin is a fork
ok id uunno which one :)
[21:41]
brycechttps://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/32ory7/ublock_is_back_under_a_new_name/ a fork by the original author
So... Origin it is I guess
[21:42]
mercutiohttps://github.com/gorhill/uBlock#performance
yeah
that's quite a memory saving
[21:46]
.... (idle for 15mn)
brycechttp://www.ghacks.net/2015/04/25/official-ublock-origin-add-on-lands-for-firefox/ also explained the story a bit, and links to the FF version [22:01]
mercutioreddit wasn't making it make much sense to me
reddit had an outage earlier today
