all their bloody kernel upgrades.
along with huge kernels
[15:27]
staticsafemercutio: yeah its annoying
i have to keep doing apt-get -y autoremove
[15:28]
mercutiostatic: i size /boot bigger
but sometimes i come across systems with small /boot
you kind of need 1gb for /boot
i'm shifting to custom kernels slowly again anyway

oh and in initramfs you can change "most" to "dep"
but yeah my kernel is smaller than their kernel, plus no initramfs.
MODULES=dep in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf
that system has that
on real machines it means if you change sas controllers or such you may run into issues with modules=dep though[15:33] <mercutio> with vm's it should be fine.

mnathani_whats a relatively inexpensive IP controlled power switch / power bar [20:08]
mercutiomost people use apc
but they're not really considered inexpensive.
[20:11]
phluxWould it be appropriate for me to start a gofundme page for music equipment?
That way my current followers can contribute donations?
[20:13]
mercutioyeah
sure
people use it for all kinds of things these days
[20:14]
phluxCool [20:14]
mercutioit kind of surprised me how well it works [20:14]
phluxI want to do something where certain donations get certain promotions [20:14]
mercutiokickstarter has that [20:15]
phluxLike, for XX amount, you'll get the album once it's produced [20:15]
mercutioi haven't paid muuch attention to gofundme [20:15]
phluxfor XX amount, you'll get the album and a T-Shirt [20:15]
mercutiohow much are you aiming for? [20:15]
phlux$2,900.00 will get me the live equipment I need and help recoup some studio costs
It's really more like $4,500.00, but I'm investing in myself some too
[20:16]

phluxbut I know others have asked how they can help, and I never really have an answer, because I don't want to just say "Oh just give me cash." [20:16]
mercutioi don't really know your requirements though
hmm, that's 200+v
i wonder what voltage arp is running on.
phlux: from what i understand you can probably get $500 to $1000 without even needing t-shits, albums etc.
[20:16]
phluxThat would be awesome [20:18]
mercutiobut yeah if you want like $5000 probably a good idea to have albums/tshirts.
phlux: i think facebook etc makes this stuff "easier"
especially as far as getting 10 friends or somethign to donate money
and more acquaitances.
like someone who's seen you play once may donate $20, $50 etc.
[20:18]
phluxyeah [20:19]
mercutioit wouldn't have been how i guessed it would work, but seems to be how things happen in general. [20:19]
phluxI've got a lot of followers on FaceBook who found me just because they've been to a show [20:19]
mercutiobut yeah, canvasing friends for money i wouldnt' expect to be so fruitful.

mercutiocool.

er
on Spotify
Hah, sure, it's just an old video my wife recorded in my house of me doing a Pearl Jam concert
[20:23]
mercutioyour more recent stuff is on sonducloud? [20:24]
phluxMy (very close) cousin had died earlier that day, and Pearl Jam was his favorite band [20:24]
mercutiodamnit my typign suucks today. [20:24]
phluxto be honest, most of my more recent stuff is recorded locally and not on a computer yet
but, I can share a cover with you
[20:25]
mercutioahh ok [20:25]
phluxI threw this page up with some songs I just recorded in front of my laptop [20:25]
mercutioso you don't record direct to computer? [20:25]
phluxhttp://www.phluxbox.com/kmtmusic/?page_id=2
just to test the audio player (which I don't like)
some crude recordings, but they're servicable
Naw, I have a studio I go to for more professional recordings
[20:25]
m0undsphlux: have you looked at soundcloud?
they have an embeddable player that's pretty decent
[20:26]
phluxand for live recordings we use a tapeout on the mixer [20:26]
mercutiocool. [20:26]
phluxm0unds: I haven't, but I will. [20:26]

mercutioheh [20:30]
phluxeven just saying "congrats on a good show" goes a long way with me [20:30]
mercutioi wish i could play guitar well
i prefer this older one to the newer ones :)
even with the worse production quality
it probably helps i know the song :)
why do you play it so high up the neck btw?
is the song normally like taht?
ok i'll shut up now :)
[20:30]
phluxhaha sorry
yeah, that song is played way up there
it's got some funky chords
[20:39]
mercutioi think it's the strings
the highs sound all muffled on youtube
but it may be just youtube
i'm trying to find a bloody pick.
i have to learn guitar more haha
and buy new strings probably
[20:40]
phluxI restring religiously [20:41]
mercutioi use elixir long life strings
which helps a little
[20:42]
phluxI do too on my acoustics
Super Slinkys on the electrics
[20:42]
mercutiothey sound good fater like 3 months [20:42]
m0undsernie ball, wut wut [20:42]
mercutiod'j whatever ones sound shit after 2 weeks [20:42]
phluxI just use elixers because they don't break [20:43]
m0undsyeah, i have elixirs on my acoustic because they don't rust and don't break [20:43]
mercutiomy electric has fucked pickups [20:43]
phluxI mean, they do, but not as frequently as others [20:43]
m0undsi use d'addarios on my electric, flatwound strings on my 4-string bass and on one of my electrics [20:43]
phluxI've got a Taylor acoustic and a Fender Sonoran acoustic, and the Fender is my favorite [20:43]
mercutiohow often do you change? [20:43]
phluxFor electrics, I've got a strat, tele, and jaguar
Tele is my favorite
[20:44]
m0undsi have an ESP viper, washburn idol and jackson dinky [20:44]
phluxmercutio: I restring after every show or every two weeks
whichever comes first for that guitar
[20:44]
mercutioyeah that's quite quick :) [20:44]
m0undsmy acoustic is a washburn something or other, d-100 i think [20:44]
phluxm0unds: I feel like we play two different types of music haha [20:44]
m0undsi play a bit of everything [20:44]
mercutiohmm mine is takamine [20:45]
phluxmercutio: can't risk breaking during a show [20:45]
m0undsmy jackson and esp are both ~15 years old [20:45]
phluxI also change my 9V out on my acoustics before every show [20:45]
m0undsso they date back to my high school days :) [20:45]
phluxI used to buy/trade all the time [20:45]
mercutiohmm that reminds me i have some cable to plug into computer [20:45]
phluxbut I've calmed down since I moved out on my own [20:45]
mercutiowith usb direct [20:45]
m0undsi bought a PODxt when i moved out so i could play without annoying apartment neighbors [20:46]
mercutioi have a washburn bass.
i can't play bass for shit
[20:46]
m0undsmy basses are a fender jazz bass w/dimarzio pickups and a yamaha 5-string something or other with active electronics that i kind of hate [20:46]
mercutiobuut it's fun to make the house wobble around [20:46]
m0undsbut i bought it pretty cheap and it's well made (just the electronics are awful) [20:47]
mercutiohmm my bass is active too, so is my electric guitar.
what's wrong with active
[20:47]
m0undsnothing
just the electronics in my bass suck
if i refit it w/emgs or something it'd be fine
but there's no point
doesn't actually switch off the electronics when it's unplugged so it regularly kills batteries if i fail to pull them
[20:48]
mercutiohttp://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/bass_guitars/washburn/xb125
this is what i have
[20:48]
m0undsnice [20:49]
mercutioexcept it's not black
and it was bought second hand
[20:49]
m0undshttp://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/bass_guitars/yamaha/rbx775 that's the yamaha i have
i bought it used for less than $200 to try out bass playing when i was like 18, haha
[20:49]
mercutioheh [20:50]
m0undsi think i got it in 2003 [20:50]
mercutiohow much wsa the bass amp?
damnit where is my pick
[20:50]
m0undsi bought an ashdown 4x10 and head to gig with [20:51]
mercutioit shows i haven't tried playing in a long time [20:51]
m0undshaven't played a show in probably 10yrs, played w/friends' bands years and years ago [20:51]
mercutioi was really keen to learn stuff before there was an earthqauke where i lived [20:51]
m0undsah [20:51]
mercutioand i was really motivated
then like all motivation dropped afer earthquuake
and my electric guitar got a little damaged
and i completely got out of rhythm etc.
it helped that i had a neighbour tghat played guitar that always came around
i seem to only want to try and get better when people play around me.
finally found a pick :)
[20:51]
m0undshaha, right on [20:55]
mercutioyip need new strings
is ebay the cheapest place to buuy strings?
[21:09]
m0undsumm, maybe [21:14]
mercutioi probably should get some locally if i want to get quick
otherwise i'll lose enthusiasm :)
but i was wondering if i should get a few packs or something as well
[21:15]
m0undsyeah, the only strings i don't buy locally are the oddball ones (flats) that my local places don't offer without special order
i used to buy from juststrings.com a lot
[21:16]
mercutiolast time i bought strings locally i asked for a discount and got it :)
surprisingly the markup isn't that insane
for some reason tehy always have more than one music shop near each other
so you can just go the other one if the first one doesn't have stock here
ernie oddball are popular though?
[21:16]
m0undsernieball? yeah
i meant oddball as in weird
flatwound strings vs round wound strings
the winding material isn't round wire, it's flat wire
so instead of squeaking when you move your fingers on the strings, it's mostly silent
on a bass it can make a fretted bass sound almost like a fretless or upright bass (but not quite, since some of the tonality comes from contacting wood vs metal frets)
[21:19]
mercutioyeh that's common here?
isn't it called slinky or something
or is that something different
[21:20]
m0undsdifferent [21:21]
mercutioahh ok [21:21]
m0undsslinkys are round wound ernie ball strings [21:21]
mercutioahh ok [21:21]
m0undsnickel usually, but they do steel too (which sound a little brighter and harsher) [21:21]
mercutioyeh i think that is what i have for my electric [21:22]
m0undsmore mass for your pickups though, so they can also sound louder too [21:22]
mercutioi should figure out if i can fix my pickups
it cuts out all the time
it fell over
i think something landed on it
it's like the only seriously damaged thing i had though
and it's so much easier to play than acoustic
because the strings are close to the neck
i dunno why people say you should start with acoustic
it seems harder?
[21:22]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [21:24]
m0undsmight check to see if you have a weak solder joint on the vol/tone pots
or if you have a pickup selector, there
[21:33]
mercutiowell it's physically pushed in too
and it was immediately after earthquake
but yeah the soldering may be loose
but it needs to be positioned properly somehow too
i imagine where the scre goes in as pushed athrouugh a bit
i think i'm going to try taking it somewhere that does repairs
but maybe i shoudl check myself first
[21:33]
m0undsshould have adjustment screws
wait, bass or guitar?
[21:35]
mercutioguitar
yeah buut i think it's pushed through
[21:37]
m0undsoh
hm
[21:37]
mercutioi can't even remember the make of it
i should have another look
one was worse than the other
it doesn't look that bad actually
schecter
mostly the paint is chipped a bit
actually it seemes like the selector for pickuups is the biggest issue
that may b eeasy to fix
[21:37]
when you have a pots that makes noise when you move it around
that normally means it's old and needs replacing, right?
[21:55]
m0undshttp://www.cisco.com/web/about/doing_business/leap-second.html#%7EProductInformation wee [21:55]
mercutiobut if it suddenly did that after water damage does that mean it may be able to be cleaned? [21:55]
m0undsyeah, you could try potentiometer cleaner
it'll get rid of scratchiness if it's not caused by corrosion
[21:55]
mercutiowell it got bad suddenly
but i think fish tank landed over it
surprisingly no strings broke
[21:56]
m0undsoh [21:56]
mercutioi can probably replace the pots
and the switch
buut i duunno if the pickups are ok
hmm pickups cost heaps
looks to be around $150 US for pickups plus shipping
so hopefulyl it's just the pots :)
