m0undsi paid for spideroak, but not dropbox
probably letting spideroak lapse though. they had a system issue a month ago that affected a bunch of customers, making it impossible to recover data while the outage was going. they haven't released any kind of cause analysis or anything.
lasted almost 4 days. i actually needed to recover something from the svc, so that was pretty inconvenient.

mnathanido you know if spideroak uses s3 as a backend like dropbox? [09:24]

m0undsno, they use their own hardware
part of the problem i have with them - some sort of issue rendered my account unusable for 4 days (no access at all) and there's been no disclosure as to what caused it
and since it's all their own systems and platform, there's no way to know what's wrong unless they disclose, so that makes me hesitant to want to keep using them. coupling that with the near nonexistent support for their client software and i have a hard time recommending them anymore

mnathani_others have recommended https://www.cyphertite.com/
I recommend http://www.code42.com/crashplan/
[20:51]
brycec?
Are we talking distributed file storage and replication? Or are we talking off-site backups?
[20:52]
..... (idle for 21mn)
mnathani_I use the distributed file storage and replication (dropbox) as my backup for non critical stuff
I think the other 2 I mentioned are strictly off-site backups
[21:13]

whats proxy arp and can I use it to assign a public v4 IP from withing my block at ARP to a host at my home over a vpn tunnel? [21:35]
mercutioyeah you can
basically it means it says "i have this ip" on the ethernet
"by proxy"
when really it just has a route to the ip
[21:45]
mnathani_ahh
how would I setup openvpn to work with that?
would it be something like public ip via static route 10.1.1.8 or something
[21:46]
......... (idle for 40mn)
m0undsi started using crashplan after my issue w/spideroak, it's been fine
for syncing stuff between devices, i use onedrive
[22:27]
mnathani_google drive is another option
as is apple icloud
I like dropbox's simplicity
[22:32]
brycecI suppose iCloud is an option, though its device compatibility is exceptionally low compared to OneDrive and Dropbox [22:37]
m0undsyeah, i don't even use icloud on my macbook or my ipad [22:38]
brycecfwiw, I would probably recommend OneDrive considering they're pretty much in feature-parity with Dropbox, and they're throwing space at you like there's no tomorrow. (15GB free, +100GB for having a Dropbox account, +100GB for using Bing...) And oh look, 5GB referral link https://onedrive.live.com/?invref=ca1f85bc46408b9e&invsrc=90 [22:39]
m0undsyeah [22:39]
brycec(15GB for OneDrive's photo-syncing) [22:39]
m0undswhich is awesome [22:39]
brycecA buddy of mine uses his OneDrive storage for VHD storage [22:40]
m0undsif you happen to use office365 (consumer) they started offering unlimited storage
went 30GB->100GB->10TB->unlimited
[22:40]
brycecNot unlimited, 1TB according to https://onedrive.live.com/options/Upgrade [22:40]
mnathani_business office365 includes 1 TB [22:40]
m0undsmine shows unlimited w/an active acct [22:41]
mnathani_they still have max files limit [22:41]
brycec(But maybe there's a different plan you're seeing) [22:41]
m0undsmaybe [22:41]
mnathani_and also 2 gb max individual file [22:41]
m0undsmine's on my acct
logging in to look again
shows 10TB right now
[22:41]
brycecNice, m0unds [22:41]
mnathani_maxes out at 20,000 files [22:42]
brycecwell that's thoughtful of Dropbox - happened to be in their help section and this popped up "You recently deleted, moved, or renamed more than 500 files from your account. Do you need help restoring them?" [22:42]
m0undsoffice onedrive has a 20k file limit because they use sharepoint [22:42]
mnathani_yea [22:42]
m0undswhich is going to be changed out to use a backend similar to the consumer onedrive
but w/sharepoint compatibility
[22:42]
mnathani_I would exceed that limit [22:43]
brycecmnathani_: OneDrive's file-size limit was upped to 10GB last September.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2605912/onedrive-now-allows-files-of-up-to-10gb.html
[22:43]
mnathani_brycec: good to know [22:43]
brycec(And I will say that, at least in my neck of the US, their up/download speeds are faster than Dropbox's) [22:43]
m0undsyea, same here [22:43]
brycec(A better first-party article https://blog.onedrive.com/onedrive-now-supports-10-gb-files/) [22:43]
m0undsi tend to get east coast AZs for dropbox
https://preview.onedrive.com/?wt.mc_id=oo_blog_onedrive_insertblogtitlehere
if you happen to have an active office365 consumer acct ^
[22:43]
brycec"insertblogtitlehere" lolol [22:45]
m0undsyeah, i was trying to find the promo site and that was linked from phil thurrott's blog
haha
[22:45]
brycecm0unds: I'm guessing the difference would be "direction". Unlimited for existing 365 customers, or what I saw was for OneDrive customers signing up for 365 [22:45]
mnathani_you mean paul thurrott [22:45]
m0undswhatever his name is
that guy
i got the first letter of his first name right
[22:46]
brycecheh [22:47]
m0undshaha, update to rust allowing you to assign a sleeping bag to a player (Friend, random person, whomever)
There will obviously be some issues with this. Maybe I will spend a buttload of resources to full your screen with sleeping bags calling you a bitch. Maybe I will make a sleeping bag for everyone on the server to fool them into spawning into my jail
thanks for the ideas, garry
(rust dev)
[22:48]
mnathani_does onedrive have selective syncing? [22:49]
brycecYes, mnathani_
m0unds: How does a programming language have sleeping bags???
protip: Don't name your game the same as a popular programming language.
and I thought "PS2" was confusing...
[22:50]
...... (idle for 28mn)
mike-burnsLucky for them, they didn't name it the same as a popular programming language! [23:18]
