"While the South Pole lies on a continental land mass, the North Pole is located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean amid waters that are almost permanently covered with constantly shifting sea ice." -Wikipedia mercutio: yeah it's the shifting that's the issue i thin
However, the Soviet Union, and later Russia, constructed a number of manned drifting stations on a generally annual basis since 1937, some of which have passed over or very close to the Pole. Since 2002, the Russians have also annually established a base, Barneo, close to the Pole.
Barneo ice base consists of an ice runway and an ice camp. Because of the constant moving ice on the Arctic Ocean, it has to be rebuilt from scratch each year.

RandalSchwartz: wanna be my first victim? RandalSchwartz: victim of what? mkb: http://www.martinbrandenburg.com/2015/ss/2015020901.png
do I have to have Unicode to use a computer now? How is that a sane default when there's regular quotes gcc could use just fine anisfarhana: RandalSchwartz: Will explain after this. RandalSchwartz: an ordinary ASCII file should be just fine to gcc.
are you sure your editor isn't adding a BOM or something? mkb: no it's outputting Unicode RandalSchwartz: one of your envars is telling it that it can, then. mkb: which my terminal doesn't understand, and as an added bonus, managed to not display the text in the quote RandalSchwartz: I think it's LOCALE mkb: I know. Because LC_CTYPE doesn't get transmitted through SSH RandalSchwartz: LC_ALL or something BryceBot: That's what she said!! RandalSchwartz: maybe LANG
I set both of them mkb: but the trade off is curly quotes somewhere or not even displaying the error message; it's obvious GCC should ignore locale and output regular byte 39 quotation marks RandalSchwartz: or you could fix your ssh path so that it's utf-8 clean.
that took me a bit of work, but eventually, I got it to work
all the way into emacs :)
emacs -> tmux -> ssh -> Terminal.app mkb: setting locale on POSIX breaks sort RandalSchwartz: it shouldn't
POSIX, or Linux?
do you have a citation for that so I can understand? mkb: yeah let me find it
the problem is that it tries to sort based on the locale instead of in byte order and now it's different and this can cause very subtle bugs
it's worse when you want to do things like convert all to uppercase and then all to lower
if you're in a german locale and you have their ss ligature you get -> SS and then back to lower SS -> ss RandalSchwartz: sounds like a Gnu utils problem. mkb: this isn't the one about sort but you see: http://utcc.utoronto.ca/~cks/space/blog/linux/BashLocaleScriptDestruction RandalSchwartz: not a unix problem in general. mkb: well POSIX says sort respects locale RandalSchwartz: as it should.
if in my language, b is before a, that's how it should sort mkb: should it? then the order changes based on locale RandalSchwartz: yes
makes perfect sense.
some languages sort combo letters (like ss => es-set in german) as if it was a single character mkb: no. that sort of sorting is for user-visible stuff. sort really doesn't count. It's used in too many shell scripts which aren't RandalSchwartz: others place them at the end.
sort probably has some sort (heh) of switch to say "ignore locale" then mkb: and how do you propose to solve lower -> upper -> lower? Unicode knows the entire German dictionary?
has to be the other way around; old stuff doesn't know to say the switch RandalSchwartz: yeah, overloaded expectations mkb: But you're right; the GNU manpage says to set LC_ALL=C before running sort if you want an repeatable sort order RandalSchwartz: they're always repeatable. :)
you mean "consistent with classic Unix" mkb: and across environments
Whatever GNOME calls Nautilus these days can sort like that but a lower-level sort is going to have to go by byte order anisfarhana: RandalSchwartz: http://goo.gl/CxgF9 BryceBot: http://goo.gl/CxgF9 -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_digger RandalSchwartz: I know what a gold digger is

Pfttt brycec: BryceBot: no BryceBot: Oh, okay... I'm sorry. 'LC_ALL or something' brycec: @ud buxom BryceBot: buxom: (Of women) Full-figured. Often quite busty and ample-bodied. Also see "real women". <2005-03-17T00:00:00+00:00> Example: "There was a time when voluptuous, buxom ladies were worshipped... but now anorexic women are admired instead." brycec: mkb: Giving your error a cursory glance, it appears that somewhere along the line, " was replaced by curly quotes (I blame OS X... Which incidentally causes problems when it replaces ... with a single-character ellipsis), or the file content was copy/pasted from a webpage (which also often replace " with curly quotes). In addition, your terminal may not be handling unicode (for any number of reasons, too
vast to detail)
The number of times I've seen errors like that... It was always a dead giveaway the student (I was TA'ing) had copy/pasted at least some part of their assignment and didn't even try and compile it.
Reading further into the error, I'm guessing lack of unicode was actually on the far end of your job, and recorded to the output as-is. anisfarhana: You are not going to add it to your bot Brycec mkb: brycec, nope lack of unicode is my end. whoever set up the computer I'm using thinks LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 is a good default, and gcc takes that as a license to print curly quotes.
not that there's a way to check, but nothing ever checks that the display end will know what to do with them
I guess this is the equivalent of TERM being set wrong nowadays
but I was more into complaining that computers don't just work than trying to fix it anisfarhana: You guys are weird.
Hmm..if i am using Medium now, can i downgrade to Small? brycec: I've never seen GCC spit out curly double-quotes, let alone be able to ingest them as regular double-quotes. *shrug* mercutio: why is en_US.UTF-8 bad?
what's a good UTF encoding?
i usually iso 8859
but that's not utf..
